Are they like coffin bearers? An engine is a heavy old thing to carry around with you.
I keep my engine in the engine bay - supported with engine mounts.

Piece of wood under sump to spread load maybe a good idea.
Yes, sensible, I forget to add things like that because it's so obvious to an old spanner(er) like me!![]()
TBH if theres risk they're gonna do that they shouldn't be working on it anyroadYes i often do that, what is so obvious to us may not be so obvious to others though. So to all the amateurs out there NEVER put a jack under a sump without something to spread the load.![]()

True, but there are those with no idea that do try.![]()
Yes, a little information can be dangerous. A friend of mine called my for help - he couldn't get the oil filter off his Mini (no strap wrench) I said hammer a screwdriver through the casing and then us the screwdriver as a lever - don't worry I'll be round soon.
As I pulled up he was refiling the engine with oil - "don't need you - done it" he said smugly - only a nice puddle of oil was forming under the car as he poured the oil. I had a quick look "you haven't changed the filter!" I said looking at the holey casing. "Yes I have" he said pointing to the bucket with the old one in. He only used the same screwdriver technique to tighten the new one!![]()
Previously the same guy (with the same car) called me at home - "I topped my oil up - now the car won't turn over." He did top it up - to the oil filler brim! Although by the time I made it round there a fair amount of it had escaped out the dipstick hole. It transpired he made four trips to the motor-factors - he had put nearly 25 litres of oil in before he was satisfied it was "full up". :frusty:

Not as good as my ex missus. Who is a college lecturer by the way. She decided to top the rad up on her Mini and filled the engine and gearbox with water. It's just below the level of the filler neck, she says on the phone, but the engine won't start. You really do have to wonder sometimes. :scratching_chin::scratching_chin:
