Replacing air filter & breather filter on 2003 TD6

Am going to replace the air filter on my 2003 TD6, have got the large kitchen roll type one, but been told to change the breather filter while its in bits, anyone done this?

Also read about swapping the breather filter for a ''vortex' filter, anyone know what this is? I've seen the original filters, along with a plastic housing for about £35, is this what everyone changes?
