Removal of front cross member.

I'm having trouble removing the IRD. Seems as though the welded plate (for the front right lower mount) on the front cross member is causing the IRD to be Jammed / and is extremely difficult to remove.

I've been thinking about removing the front cross member. Are there any known problems with doing this ? Will the engine drop out on me ?? erk!. . . Hmmmmmmm

I've tried jacking the engine up for more room but this is not working.

In Haynes the subframe needs to be dropped on 2001 models onwards. Mine is pre01.
