Just about to get my block ready for rebuilding and was thinking about the running in. Are there any special things I am supposed to do with block on rebuild or once in?
I am putting in new rings, shells cam and followers.

Does the pump need filling with vaseline like the old v8?
How long does the run in period last? Take it its about 1000 miles below 2k or something similar?

Help much appreciated.

Use cam lube, and run the engine at around 2K revs for at least ten minutes before allowing it to idle. Cam wear is at its worst at idle. Other than that break in isn't necessary - just don't thrash it for about 500 miles.

Use lots of cam lube. Leave plugs out and spin engine until oil lamp goes out. Then put plugs in and run at 2,000 until working temp is reached. No sustained high rpm for a couple of hundred miles and no heavy loading of engine.

Thanks chaps, after I posted I did a search and found something about. Putting a fuse in the number 11 slot under the seat? When running in. Put box in drive ? What's that all about?

As far as i am aware, putting a fuse in position 11 puts transfer box in neutral for towing.

I'm sure I've read that somewhere too. Doing that would put the transfer box in neutral and having the autobox in D would I presume put some small load on the engine? You couldn't drive like that obviously, no drive going to the axles, so not really sure what it was about? The load on the engine would be very small and hardly significant?

Think I will give it a go when I get the engine back in. Just dropped the block off ,and heads for fettling today. Will be a couple of weeks before I get it built back up and get it installed.
