Probably.

It's possible that the injector lift pressures are set too low and they are
opening at the lower pressure and hence allowing slightly too much fuel in.
It doesn't take a lot of fuel to give black smoke. My preferred option would
be to get the injectors reset by whoever supplied them, explaining the fact
that there wasn't black smoke beforehand. If you do wish to adjust the pump
however, there is a screw and locknut (normally lead sealed) half way along
the side of the upper chamber, side nearest the engine block. Out increases
max flow, in decreases.

Possibly, but if opening faces forward you might even get a little ram
effect if you go fast enough!

Sound theory, if it works. I find that oiled filters such as K&N's tend to
quickly choke to a lower flow than a std element does, even though the
initial flow is higher.
