just looking at possible buying of a 1986 rangie in mint condition, with 3ltr mazda/perkins diesel fitted, just wondered what sort of mpg I could expect

I cant really say what youd be getting with a Mazda engine but roughly 28mpg on a 2.5 auto is about right a 3ltr which the p38 should of had would probably be better because the truck is so heavy the 2.5 has to work harder to pull/push it along a 3ltr would maybe be good for 35+MPG. Think some guys put a 3ltr out of a Disco 3 in a p38 and that was ment to be doing 40MPG again because the Disco is about 400Kgs heavier than a P38 the engine was hardly working when cruising along.
