I need to replace my top hose, as it's swollen. Any hints and tips, specifically to avoid airlocks?

you shouldent get any air locks if your only doing the top hose unless you drain the system empty but refill slowly and make sure the breather pipe (the thin one at the top left of the rad when looking in) isnt blocked or even better unplug it from the rad when refilling untill water starts coming out of it. and after every thing is buttoned up tight run the engine untill normal temp giving it a rev now and then to losen any traped bubbles and keeping a close eye on the water level

Might be worth investigating why the hose is swollen. The resovoir cap has a pressure release valve built in. When the system is running normally it pressurises to 15psi (i think). If the cap fails the system will over pressurise which will cause the hoses to get hard. I wouldn't have thought a failed cap would have caused the hose to swell. You may have something worse lurking....
