right just went out to start fitting a new water pump rad and thermostat and when i come to undo the bolts at the bottom of the rad the "captive" nuts spin wtf do I do now ?

you could consider cutting bolts off and fitting new nut rivets if they are accessible-pictures would help suggest ideas

Do you mean the bolts that fix the radiator to the metal brackets that support the radiator?
If so remove the 2 bolts at the side of the radiator and remove the frame and radiator togeather the bottom of the rad just sits in two rubber mounts and slides out.

Providing you have unbolted the oil cooler, aircon condensor and if it's a diesel intercooler which are also bolted to the mounting rails.

Are they needed? I've just had to chisel the plastic bits off, whilst changing my radiator for a new one.

I don't want to do that again if my new rad ever has to come out, there does seem to be a lot of support for the rad without them.

I suppose the whole lot could bounce out of the mountings, but even with everything disconnected it took a lot of jiggling to get my old one out.

Bloody captive nuts, who designs these things....?
