i have a 300 TDI discovery and over the past few months i have started getting a crunch when changing from 1st to 2nd, it doesn't happen all the time but can happen at high or low revs and at any time, will it keep doing the same and not get worse or can i expect it to fail on me completely one day?.....anyone else had this problem?.....and yes i do realize a new R380 box fitted will cost me the equivalent to that of a defence budget of a small country....just trying to avoid it if possible.

Check the oil level is correct, my rangey had a rough-ish gear change until I changed the oil, found out it was very low, smooth and silky now...

I used the correct oil from Land Rover, seems to make a difference...

i also have problems changing from 1st to 2nd when the box is cold but after a few miles its ok with the exceptions of fifth down to fourth i need to touch third but thats cos the box is ready for changing.

Depends how bad it is, but it might also be worth looking to change the clutch damper. Bitch of a job to do for a £20+ part, 'specially if the clutch doesn't bleed properly ... ;)

could be to do with cold running, i live close to work and it's through a town centre so most of my driving is 1st and 2nd gear, never gets chance to warm up much, i noticed though that after the snow we had a few weeks back when i had to use low range it didn't do it for a few weeks after. never seems to get worse though, second engages fine but does it with the crunching.......it does this maybe two or three times a week......

yeah thats what i mean, when i put it back in high range the problem wasn't there for a few weeks, as if it relocated something back into place, i could live with it but it's really annoying......might be worth the repair bill just for that alone!
