The front prop shaft fell off today, fortunately at very low speed on very quiet road. Will do the knackered old beast any harm if i just disconnect and drive with rear wheel drive?

Likely any damage has already been done. Worth investigating what caused the old prop to break off. Maybe the VCU is already seized.

If the VCU is seized it will do no harm to run without the front prop. If the VCU is not seized, running without the front prop for any length of time will cause it to seize.

Wow. I'm always quite surprised when I read about this happening.
Props don't just fall off - knackered UJs are rarely quiet. Do people not listen to their cars? This is a potentially lethal thing to happen to a Rangey.
I'm paranoid at the slighest new noise on my vehicle. I certainly couldn't ignore a knackered UJ for the time it takes to disintegrate.

Maybe if the VCU is seized you don't get the UJ knocking because of the wind up in the transmission keeping everything locked up tight

Perhaps it maybe a good idea to check and grease them now and again. Waiting for a noise to appear maybe just a little too late.

Think my post about servicing them has more merit than waiting for them to start knocking, in forwards or reverse.

P38 4.6 Auto. Last year I had a new transfer box fitted, the new box running quiet revealed front prop UJs were bad so I took of the front prop shaft to do the work replacing the UJs whilst doing this I drove the car on the rear prop shaft only. I live in a hilly area and on the way home one night had a horrible noise from the new trans box, spoke to Ashcrofts who advised (strongly) that I was damaging the viscous coupling! So put the rebuilt front prop back on and no further problems - could have been an expensive mistake.
I have though in the past ran a 3.9 Classic without the front prop with no problems BUT the viscous coupling was siezed!!
