i have ex mod landy 1974.put new engine in and now there is heavey light blue smoke.
any body knows whats wrong.

HI slob, answer to your queston.
the engine is 2 1/4 DISEL.
the reason for change, the previous owner had run it with a cracked head, the landy not his, and it had ceased.
oil sump was full of water pistern and bore shatered.

if its just on start up this int usually a problem , if its all the time it is.. it could be that you have oil in the exhaust pipe which needs to burn off? and i know from experience this can take some time. or maybe the injun you put in is ferked??,valve seals, rings, the usual crap

hi.thanks for that.havent got compression tester, only running for half hour at a time dosent seem to be using any oil the engine seemed to be ok when took out of the other vechicle.

adjusted pump, the smoke as cut down there is no smoke on high revs.it only seems to be smoking when releasing accelerator.

If it is giving smoke on the overun as you say that is valve guides / valve seals.

thanks. He wants to know best way of doing them. heard they can be done without taking head off is that right and could anyone tell me how.

The old tried and trusted way was to have a piston all the way down the bore, with the spark plug removed fill the bore with string then bring the piston back up the bore so that it holds the valves closed. with the rocker shaft removed you can then lever (with a suitably shaped tool) the valve down to remove the collets and valve spring to give access to the valve seal. This way does take a lot of time, i personally have never done it this way I have always removed the head and rebuilt everything properly.

have you any idea how long it was sitting around beore you got it? Mike and how many miles have you done with it since fitting it?

The old land rover diesels will go on for years with the smoke, i have one thats pretty knakrd in my series 1! is a pig 2 start puffs blue smoke after about 30 seconds its all gone and pulls fine! You could just leave it and save yourself some work aslong as it not to bad!!
