power problem

hi, can anyone help with the lack of power with my 1986 defender, she smokes alot and struggles to get up hills i was told it could be the egr valve, needs cleaning out? can anyone help
 
hi i am having the same prob on my series 3 i think it might be fuel starvation due to the fuel filter being lower than the carb
