L322 Possible fuel pump issues

Afternoon all, clueless muppet again.!
L322 , could someone give me a definitive answer as to what the silver cylinder is on the underside of the Range Rover. I’ve been told it’s a fuel pump but also told it’s the fuel regulator.
I know the main pump is under the rear seat, so I’m guessing it’s a regulator not a pump. As I say , just wanted a definitive answer.

Is it in the fuel line? I don't know what year your car is or what engine so hard to comment further.

It’s in the fuel line. 2003 diesel. Post edited to include same .

I'm not aware of a fuel regulator on that vehicle under the body, others may know more.

So if that’s a fuel pump, why when there’s one in the tank?

It's a saddle tank so there's one in the tank to move the fuel from one side to the other.

And why have 1 when you can have 3

I was under the impression that the tank had 2 pumps inside one to feed the high pressure pump and the other to transfer fuel over to that pump!

Nothing in RAVE for 2 in tank pumps

In tank pump feeds the underbody pump
Under body pump feeds the fuel filter at 3.5bar irrc,
Filter feeds High pressure pump
High pressure pump feeds injectors,

Return from fuel rail lands in the return on the pump on drivers side of the tank but passes through the sender in the left side to transfer fuel over,

When the in tank pumps get weak they can still feed the under body pump but not have enough pressure to push fuel from left too right,

Thats why when the in tank pump fails it will still feed the inline pump but create no return pressure so fuel gets stuck in the left side 17 liters and you run out at 1/4 of a tank,

In the left side its just like a bit of pipe work and a level sensor for fuel to fall in and get sucked/pushed too the pump side its not technically a pump

Similar setup bmws use and nearly every one (16 out of 17 in total) has chewed an intank pump the same way as did my td6, low pressure but still working,
