stupid idea... been proposed before... was rejected as a stupid idea then too :D

Too many users on here, wouldn't work, would just cause major major dummy spitting and be full of newbees asking about tyre sizes...

Actually when a few people have been on the IRC channel trax created its worked very well.

Not everyone connects at once so that doesn't really matter. IRC can work with hundreds of users in one channel, so number of users is not a problem.

Is it dark up there dude? :D

A lot of people seem to have this idea that they are joining into a busy chat room. Then they leave a couple of minutes later because they realise that there is only one or two people there.

It would be a little busier if all you who actually quit after two seconds stayed a bit longer!!!

Chat rooms can have pros & cons.

+ It could give some of the full time keyboard warriors somewhere to hang out rather than clutter up threads with inane banter*, no names  (*as opposed to useful banter :p )

- someone might have to moderate it/scan logs etc. Spam could be an issue too.

A more useful feature would be a locked reference library of threads where the banter has been edited out/removed, everyone soon gets to know where the reference thread is on a particular topic so they're easy to link instead of directing noobs to the search every time. Searching for the definitive thread would be much easier as you wouldn't have to read 4 dozen threads directing someone to the search (which lets face it, is not brilliant)
The downside is it would take a hell of a lot of work to build the reference section as it becomes a small mirror of the whole forum. OK sticky threads can do this job, but then the top of the forums get cluttered if every good thread became stuck, if people rated threads more it might help, but not many people bother rating threads!

I miss half the new threads as the "new posts" search times out on about page 5 before I get to see the other 5 pages of titles

I used to moderate a big yank gardening forum where the reference section was a brilliant feature, shame it disappeared yrs ago, it could have been a good book.

The How To sections along with stickies are intended to become the points of reference but it means members need to get involved, write them and rate them.

There is a backlog waiting for approval in the 'Secure Unit' but it needs people to get involved
