Ho I'm new to this forum and the whole land rover thing aswell only owned one for 6 days and it has my head in bits drove it home no problems left it over night got up and it wouldn't start jumped it fire straight up then it happened later on so checked the battery and alternator . Alternator only producing 9v so new alternator put it on while I was charging battery fired it up no problem checked the alternator 14volts fine checked across batter 12volts and dying after about 30 min driving I was down to 11v and have had to jump it every day I've tried a very good known battery and this drains off aswell the battery light illuminates and goes off once started I've tried a earth from the ending to the battery still the same any help on this would be great thanks

The main power wire from the alternator goes direct to the heavy positive cable on the starter motor, brown Iirc, so check for power there as well.
Some alternators have various options on where you can connect the cable, so whilst the alt may be making 14 volts if the wire is connected wrongly the 14volts isnt actually going anywhere if you see what Im getting at.
What engine have you got?
Was the heavy cable to the alternator a bolt on or push on job?

200 tdi it's the bolt on cable not the push on prong type it's all connect up 100% correctly there's there's power to the starter motor from the alternator as I tho this was a possible issue and then the cable goes to the battery with no breaks but when it gets to the battery it's dead and I no it sounds like somethings not connected correctly but it is 1000 % no dought in my mind at all and as stated two different battery's both good I've drop tested them and there pretty much perfect all earths are connected and battery light comes on with ignition and goes off when started it is really really got me baffled I've had it to a auto electrician who is also stumped by it I've changed the alternator again just incase the new one was faulty but no joy still exactly the same

If the power is getting to the starter motor like you say, but it's not getting to the battery, I would suspect the starter motor being faulty. Can you disconnect the lead from the starter, wrap some tape round the power lead terminals - in other words wired direct from the alternator to the battery - bump start the engine and see if the power now gets to the battery?

Have you tried new earths?
My 200 tdi was a crap starter until I fitted new positive and negative battery cables, plus an extra couple of earths direct to gearbox and engine to chassis.
You can remove starter in situ its just a cock, refit solenoid trigger wire before refitting starter otherwise its just about impossible!

Fixed what a night mare it was to find the live from alternator goes to the starter then to the battery but the threaded bar that the lives attach to was not connected to the inside of the starter motor the cables where on the nut was tight but the bar was not connect Mes which was strange as the car would still start but not charge I've taken it off striped it down replaced it and all is well thanks god cheers for all your suggestions tho

Thats the solenoid and if its not connecting it could be its got very hot and melted it way into the solenoid plastic cap, you can buy solenoids separate.
Glad you fixed it certainly a weird fault
