My 90 retro fitted with 200tdi is coming up on 160k. There is loads of play in the transmission in that both props can turn 1/2 an inch before engaging. I can't work out if the play is at the diff or transfer box. A bloke told me that a lot of slack in antique transmissions can be taken up by replacing the drive flanges at the diff end. Is this true and how much of a job is it? I really don't want to take the gearbox out cos if it aint in the props or transfer box it has to be the output shaft in the main box right? I fear I might unearth all sorts of dramas if I delve too deep. The old girl runs fine and there is no banging through the gears but a metallic ring when engaging reverse sometimes.

I wouldn't worry to much about it, my 200tdi dico with 170'000ish on the clock is the same.

Like looking in the rear view mirror when a car pulls up close on a hill and put the handbrake on and it rolls 6 inches :D

It is a convoluted set of cogs and bits, and everywhere something meets something else there is some slack. In Landies there's about three times as many bits meeting other bits as in ornery cars, so there's lots of slack, and more as it wears in use.

For that reason it is important to drive carefully - change gears gently, match the revs both up and down the gears, let the clutch up gently, and "take up the slack" gently before sinking your right foot to the floor, especially when towing.

ONE careless snatchy gearchange can snap a main gearbox shaft instantly.
I bought my 90 with the 5th gear broken clean off, still with the shaft inside it! The guy was being smart ... fast gearchange and let the clutch up HARD. BANG!
