plain and simple way to set clutch master cylinder rod free play.

Good morning .I have heard and read so many versions on the setting of the clutch master cylinder push rod free play.
I have a land rover defender 90 TD5 2006. The clutch master cylinder"box" has no pedal height adjusting bolt,only the lower pedal stop bolt.
I am told that the clearance between the master cylinder piston and "push" rod must be 1.5mm
there are two lock nuts nearer the master cylinder and a nylock nut on the other side of the trunion
the question I ask is where to measure the clearance required.
is it measured between the lock nuts and the trunion or between the piston and the ball end of the push rod. Without the free play what will go wrong. I suspect the clutch release bearing might drag if there is no clearance.

I have never measured my tdi one, so long as pedal has obvious free play its good to go in my eyes.

As above, as long as the pedal moves a bit before the rod contacts the piston it's fine.

Lynall and Tottot .Thank you very much for getting back to me, without the pedal height adjusting bolt it takes some working out.
The clutch pedal has about 30mm free play before the clutch starts to pump fluid.(Disengage the clutch)
As for the 140mm from bottom of pedal to floor,does not work out, I have about 150 mm,
feels okay on the road.
