Petrol pipe size for 2.5 petrol to carburettor

Hello!

My father in law got me a Fuel hose, SAE J30 R6 5/16", it has been fitted connecting to the carb for about a year and it seemed to be leaking where it meets the carb, so I have tightened the jubilee clip up and now its slowly cutting through the fuel hose!

Is the size I am using right or is it too big? What's the best way of getting around this?

Would have thought that 1/4" would have been nearer to the right size.

Mine were always a slight squeeze to get on and the JC was only there to stop it blowing off under pressure from the fuel pump.
