Hi all,

I have a P38 4.0 petrol on a 1995 plate.

I used the car the other day but left the tailgate open for a few hours, then the next time I came to use it the engine wouldn't turn over when trying to start.

I though I'd killed the battery ( it is quite old ), so put it on charge for a couple of days. A few times during charging the alarm activated, even though the car was locked.

So, I've bought a brand new battery and still no joy, turn the key to pos 3 and no response. I've checked the starter moter, it turns when given power directly, and also the engine will turn when the solenoid and starter are given power directly.

Even tried the key in pos 2 ( normal running ) and jumped the starter to turn the engine but it will not fire. There is fuel in the rail.

The key activates / de-activates the central locking, I've reset the key-fob when replacing the battery and also gone through the EKA procedure. A friend also had the RR diagnostic on his PC, plugged it in and no errors or apparent code issues.

I've also replaced the key fob batteries and still no joy.

Help please ??

Thank you.

When you turn on your ignition do you see the Check Engine light come up on the display? If not you have lost sync between the becm and Ecu. You will need a Syncmate or Nanocom to allows it to resync.

Hi JT,

The 'check engine' on the right side of the dash panel does NOT light up when I move the key through the ignition sequence form 0 to III.

How / where do I get access to a Syncmate or Nanocom ?

The car is marooned on the drive, so no chance to go anyplace with it.

Thanks for the swift response though......

To be honest its worth spending the cash an buying one. The one I have is for a Thor engine so is no use to you or I would just post it. I think I paid about £80 quid for mine plus the shipping.
Mind you the reason I don't have a syncmate for my Gems is that on the 3 occasions where it has given me engine disabled it has self rectified after 15 mins of "key in - try, key out - key in - try again"
No idea why it all of a sudden fixes. Might be worth trying this on yours.

I'm actually in the process of selling the car, so this couldn't have happened at a worse time !

Thanks for your offer on your unit though, much appreciated.

I dropped a note over to Mozz Smith who has already sent over the re-sync process using the key : EKA, door, ignition - but unsuccesful.

Don't mix up your key fob loosing sync with the becm and the becm loosing sync with the ECU. These are two very different problems. Mozz's process is for the key fob. The only way to fix becm / ecu sync issues is with diagnostics.

Problem solved - towed over to Land Ranger in Stockport and after quite a bit of digging around with the Autologic, Simon managed to reset the codes in the system.

It was immobilised and the ECM / BECM codes were wrong.

Thanks all for your input.

Land Ranger are definitiely worth every penny.

Get yourself a Syncmate it will save you having to visit overcharging Simon again. You will surely need it in the future.
