So I've finally got the p38 to run and sorted the timing out on the pump but for some reason it's very smokey.

But been thinking what's the difference between the p38 and the l322 engine bays and running gear.

Are the engine mounts the same place, etc.

Basically my idea is to take the M51 engine out and replace it with the l322 m57 engine. Will the engine use the same mounts. I understand I'll need to swap the wiring loom, ecu etc.

Just wondering if it's possible with out having to add/take away bits.

The P38 was a complicated beast in its time but the L322 is a computer with an engine. All the systems you can think of are all linked in some way and may prove tricky to either unlink from original inputs without possible warning or system errors but if you can achieve it error free, you could help others with their projects. It has been done before.. I wouldn't try it even as tempting as the M57 is. Just not don't use the alloy block version. They are more prone to chain and tensioner problems... ;)

A guy in New Zealand has done it. You need to swap the gearbox for an HP24, the HP22 will not take the torque, cooling is also a problem, the standard RAD needs to be changed for the GEMS V8 version.
Personally i do not like the M57, it's over complicated. It's not an easy job, I'd go for just replacing the M51.

Nice one cheers guys.

I have been toying with scraping it, but after a half n hour with my brother I have decided to carry on and get it back on the road.
