It comes in a handy presentation case !

What I forgot to finish off was if it's not logging a fault code it's something un monitored.

The coil packs I had that failed were from island too if I recall. not their fault they don't manufacturer.. and Its the cost difference between Bosch OEM and pattern parts.

Get an ELM327 cable off eBay it's about £6. let me know and I'll send you a link to a full version generic software to clear minor codes and see run data

Thank you. The code reader I got to sue was:
OBD2 Diagnostic OBDII Lecture de Code des Défauts pour Les Véhicules...
Is that a different in operation to the one you mention?
The coil packs made a massive difference to the car, we could accelerate!!!!! It’s still working well in that way so how would I know if they are failing.

Don't let any banter put you off. The folks on here are tremendously helpful and there is wealth of knowledge to be mined from the collective that is LZ.
If you methodically go through the suggestions and keep up a dialogue of what's been done/not-yet-done the folks will help get you to a fix or an understanding of what the fix needs to be.
The P38 is a persnickety beast to fault-find but the guys on here are experienced & tenacious. Don't be put off.

Thanks, I’ll keep going. I know how annoying it is when people don’t make themselves clear with their problems but it’s such a challenging car it’s hard to understand (for me anyway). Appreciate all the ideas so far, even if I’ve already done or changed parts.....it’s just a ticking off exercise to hopefully get to the cause of the problem.

Misfire, not running on all cylinders lumpy idle or stalling would be the result of s failed coil pack.

There are loads of generic diagnostic options. depending on type you should see live data. I haven't used the generic one I have for a long time so can't remember. I have a faultmate MSV2 Extreme for the p38. If you get a cable I'm more than happy to give you a link to my Dropbox to download the generic one.

That’s so kind. Thank you. I will get the cable ASAP and let you know .
I’m thinking it might be worth buying a new coil pack, fitting it and if it’s no different take it off and keep for when it IS needed for replacement. We have a whole shelf of parts we will need....sometime with postage cost to here it’s better to stock up!!

Yes it is.. even in the home counties I've amassed parts stock!

Where in France are you ?

I thought you were in or near Poitiers Keith? It may just be a nice bus ride out then. with the Aircon on full wack!! Niiiiice and cold:D
25Km due west of Poitiers, but depending exactly where you are, there is no need to go anywhere near Poitiers. Using the N10 or A10 leave at the right point and it's a short hop on country roads.

Maybe address swapping time?

Hello all
Apologies for not writing sooner to update, I wanted to give it a good go before tempting fate however...we took the MAF sensor off and cleaned it - no visible dirt but still cleaned the edging etc with a cotton bud. Then ‘wiggled ’ the HT Leads to ensure a good connection and it ran for over a week fine. I felt it start a potential repeat and so we once again ‘wiggled’ the HT leads and again it’s fine. So we obviously now need to purchase and fit a new set of leads as despite these being fairly new - they are not of the quality needed.
Thanks again for help and ideas. I believe between you you solved my problem. I now have another one so will start a new post as I assume that’s what we are supposed to do.
Thanks again
Claire
