P38 auto gearbox fault code 21

Hi all, after start up I go about half a mile and the engine dies and I get a message gearbox fault, the fault code reader says code 21, which says engine speed signal out of range. Any ideas?.l This all started after i ran out of fuel , so i am wondering if it could be anything to do with that.

what fault reader are you using?
check the crank sensor has not collected any swarf

I am using the Lynx diagnostics. I shall have a look at the sensor tomorrow and check.

Change your fuel filter, as you ran it dry you may have pumped all sort of crap through the system. Cheap to do and even if its not the cause of your problem

Gearbox fault comes up if you coast in gear with a dead engine. If the engine is stopped you won't get an engine speed signal will you. Is this a diesel?

Yes 2.5 diesel, I have a feeling it is nothing to do with the gearbox as you say the message only comes up when the engine stops. I shall try a new fuel filter tomorrow, as this only started after i ran out off fuel

It isn't. Check the lift pump for function and change the filter. Then get back if it continues. Any air in the clear pipe after it stalls?

Changed the filter, checked the lift pump, found air bubbles in the clear plastic pipe, the gauge read just under quarter full, I managed to get to the fuel station which is just by where I live.
I put in forty pounds worth off fuel and it has been ok ever since. The gauge must be faulty so I dont let it go under half full now. Thank you all.

Ah, hold on. Problems when the tank is less than a 1/3rd full? That rings a bell. Cannot remember what caused it now but Google might help.
