I've been lusting after something akin to Memory map for a while.

Now found <http://www.gpsdash.com/overview.ppc2.php>

Theres a bit of software GPSDash2 which apart from having lots of useful
displays such as compass Altimeter and various stuff to check acceleration
descent (useful if your plane dash packs up I guess!), it also allows you to
scan in your own maps, point out a couple of reference points and hey presto
once you've tweaked a couple of settings your able to use it for walking /
lanes navigation where the normal kit falls down (road nav stuff).

You can even put on your own aerial photos. I know this is nothing new but
it's only around 20 odd euros to register and use, to me thats new!

Thought I'd share it, I'm running a nice cheap Mio 168 and have installed
this. 20 minutes of "save as" on some web based mapping sites and then
stiched the maps together on a photo package, save as PNG, run through the
supplied converter and upload to PDA.. winner! It comes with a very low res
map of the world and if you run off the edge of your own created map will
automatically jump to another map which it can display your position on....
so far the world one, but would be easy to link section you've created in
this manner.

It even does some fancy chart stuff way beyond my needs but useful for those
who like charts I suppose. No connection, just like a kid in a candy shop
now :)
