As some of you may be aware my discos been SORN for best part of 2years now, since I bought it, and with some guidance from LZ I'm getting towards the end of a somewhat lengthy project.
Work has included:
Welded new boot floor, front and rear inner arches, front footwells.
Cylinder head rebuild after skim & pressure test.
Full underbody cleanup and paint
All new trackrod ends
Front and rear axle overhaul, recon (recoated) swivels, new hub bearings.
New brake lines, reconditioned calipers
Resealed sunroofs and windows
Replacement front wing
Full new exhaust & decat
31/12.5/15 muds on 15x10s
3" extended arches
Push button start
Removed EGR
New fluid & filters
..and I'm sure plenty more Ive forgotten

So I took it out for a spin last night (first time I've ever driven a disco) after working out why I couldn't go over 30mph I got it in high range and took it round the block.
I know it's a 15year old motor but the autobox seems very jumpy when going through the gears?? Gear selector problem or is this normal?
It also clunks heavily when changing to/from reverse when stationary.

The engine noise is very loud in the cabin but am hoping once I put some of the sound proofing back in along with all the interior trim it might quieten it down a bit, also I forgot to refit the foam insulation which goes between the gear sector and trim plate which may not be helping.
I've always expected it to be a tractor once it's up and running but it seems dog rough.

Am hoping to get it through it's MOT this Saturday and was wondering whether there are any disco owners in the north west area (Chester/liverpool/Warrington) that wouldn't mind at some point in the future giving me their opinion on how it's running.
I've had no experiance with Landys before getting hold of this one and don't know of any near me..
Also any advice on the above appreciated.
Muchos thanks :) :)

Have you changed the gearbox oil when you changed the fluids? If its been stood for a while it could help also check your prop ujs mine started clunking before i replaced them.

The foam insulation should help quieten things but they do sound pretty agricultural compared to newer doozils

Depending on exactly where you are, I don't mind coming to take a look at it. Do you have land? ie can it be driven around a little, without its MoT?

Hi Paul would be great if you could come to me but I know it's an ask. Fingers crossed it might get through okay on saturday so I could come to you after then? I'm about 8miles from Chester.. :)

Sure, Saturday afternoon is okay - let me know how it gets on with the MoT and take it from there. If it fails, I can come over to you if needs be etc. Fingers x'd for the MoT etc.

just hope your disco doesnt leak ;) mine has a leak into the drivers footwell when it rains (which I have yet to find the source) and I had to remove the sound proofing cos it was soaking up the water

They all clunk going from drive to reverse , its wear on the drive shaft in the transfer box.Mines been doing it for three years since I got it. It doesn,t seem to do it when cold but once it warms up it gives a right loud clunk when I change. Scares the **** out of me sometimes ! :D

It's funny you should say that!!
Nah it's hopefully all in hand, the only apparent leak at the moment runs to rear n/side corner of the boot but should hopefully have it sorted soon

Mine seams considerably quieter if I go for very slow gear selection, obviously with disco not moving at all
