Two weeks ago I was cleaning and re-oiling my air filter on my TD4 Frelander. I noticed the half round rubber hose connecting to the EGR Valve, some of plastic air pipework and the big rubber hose with the alloy valve/ sensor thing mid way, both along the front of the engine (sorry, probably not the best description in the world) had an oily residue all over it. Well while I was there, I took the pipework of and cleaned it all up. Nice and oild free.

Anyway, last night I set to fitting a Synergy 2 module to the car and I noticed that all that pipework and ducting at the front is coated in the oily residue again, and its only been about two weeks.

Any ideas where its all comming from?

I have a feeling its the EGR Valve because thats where a lot of the oil seems to be building up but it also seems to be quite thick on the large rubber pipe that goes to the front of the car on the LHS.

I have checked the hoses and they all seem OK and none of the other pipes in the area seem to be getting oily. Could the pipes be pourous?

Look forward to hearing your opinions

Andy

When I bought my TD4 I was quite concerned about the oiliness of the pipes but from what I can gather 'they all do that'.
I cleaned mine up and realising they become porous with age I replaced the short elbow. On comparing it with the new one it was very soft and obviously weakened by the oil and, I think, more likely to fail. The new one is not yet porous and doesn't sweat oil. I have now ordered the larger elbow for the other side.
