Hi All, I've searched and found a very good "How to" on IRD drive shaft seal renewal.
Local Stratstones charge around £20 inc VAT for the seal whereas a google search shows a cost of around £8. Common part No UNG 100060L so advice, which is the best seal do I buy from dealer or off the web? Thanks

If it was me I'd get the dealer part - genuine LR. For the price differential and the aggro of having a pattern part that will need taking out again as it leaks it's not worth the grief.

Wot those boobs said ^^^^^^^.

When my IRD went I got a bearing/cooler/seal kit sent over from UK. I concluded that my Halfords socket set and christmas cracker screwdriver set was not a sufficient collection of tools to push/pull the bearings so gave the IRD & kit to a guy that rebuilds diifs (often for race cars). He said that the kit was lacking on seals and fitted some additional ones - in fact he may have used all his own procured seals. Point is he knew what he was doing with these things and the unit has been fine (for over 4 years). If you're unsure of the quality of the cheaper parts - I'd work on the basis of you get what you pay for!

nothing on price but when I was young and I had a mini in 1967 and to stop an oil leak on the drive shafts I put two seals in the hole and I never did have an oil leak on the drive shafts again

Thanks for replies
I shall buy the LR genuine part, in fairness I was offered 10% off over the phone:)
I've read through the "How to" with very good photos and, if you have done the job, was there anything that you found particularly difficult?
Over the years I've learnt to deal with most mechanical jobs; it's the diagnostics that defeat me!
