Hi everyone does anyone know the true answer to my oil light staying on longer than usual especially when parked up hill. Once it goes out it stays out and does not flicker at all the oil level is fine new filters etc could this be the dreaded bolt on the sprocket has anyone else had this problem and found the true answer I'm convused because once the light is off it stays of I would have thought the light would keep coming on if sprocket was loose any sugestions all thank you

If you take the rocker cover off and look down the chain with a bright torch you might just the see the bolt sticking out. Otherwise it is sump off. Another culprit is the oil pressure relief valve can come loose, seen it a few times. Best to verify what is happening with an oil pressure gauge. The oil pressure light will come on and off at a very low pressure, something like 4psi - so you don't want to see it on for too long!

+1 Absolutely! Do it NOW :D! :D!

Over the years I've had a few pressure switches fail ... sometimes with similar symptoms - though one in particular decided that the engine oil was far better used for coating the bay .. trust me when I say this was a mess of gargantuan proportions - the only upside being hot oil at 60psi is quite a good anti corrosion "treatment" :D   ( always a bonus on any LR ! ).

Thanks discodevon I've really tried to look after the old girl doing oil changes at 3000 miles time to use a thicker oil maybe, how sad! still have to check oil pressure though

Sorry but what filters are you using? If you lived in Scotland then I may be inclined to say use a thinner grade but as your climate is like mine it never goes below -10 degrees so you are fine

I've had the dreaded bolt on the sprocket issue but it didn't cause your syptoms, just a constant light when it let go.
The pump spindle thingy has flats on it anyway so it will rattle a bit but not spin

By the way havn't checked oil pressure yet just ordered a gauge and pressure switch will let you all know the results
