Hi all, just joined up in the hope I can get some good advice here.

I've just disposed of "Rusty", a 91 V8 Rangie, who really lived up to his name. Still, I own a welder so it wasn't that that got him, it was an engine out job that I finally baulked at. Just don't have the time.

So now I need a replacement but I'm in a quandry as to what to go for. I could stretch to £4-5k but would prefere to spend something like £3.5k. It'll be my main transport though I don't do much mileage these days. I'm after a diesel this time 'cos 15-18mpg just isn't funny. The plan is to do some off roading, mostly green lanes with the odd play in a quarry. Longer term I'd like to do a Morroco trip, always wanted to drive in the Sahara....

So the obvious choice is Disco versus Defender 90. The disco is likely to be cheaper and more comfy but there's a lot more to go wrong in there. Defenders I've looked at seem to be going for silly money despite having very obvious serious faults. That said faults on a defender look a lot easier to sort out than similar problems on a disco...

All opinions most welcome.

Thanks.

You won't get much Defender for that money. I'd go for a basic Disco Td5 without air suspension etc.
I recently saw a tidy Y plate Td5 S at a specialist dealer for £5.5k so you should be able to get one for alot less than that.

Fer that money you should be able to get a pretty good 300 90, you'll lose some creature comforts and you need to check the chassis really well but as you say you can work on it and the back floor won't fall out when an ant farts near it! There are quite a few about and they are way easier to tell a good un than a disco would be. You should get a Y reg disco for MUCH less than that i would have thought!

Well i had a land rover defender 90 changed for the same reason! but instead i got a land rover discover 300 tdi, they are a great not all complicated like a TD5, good on fuel, you can find a very reasonable one for £2,500 and they are easy to adjust (for green laning in this case)
