Right, had another quick play with the rangerover the weekend. Had to fit new brake pipes front to rear as they had slightly rotted to a pile of dust. Then I thought I'd start it up and try the new camshaft sensor that I had fitted. Took it a little drive to the end of the road and back on petrol as the gas seems to make it start misfiring alot. Just as I was about to turn around the bloody thing cut out. Started it back up again, which took a few attempts, then cut back out immediatley. So I started it again, but held the revs on, started but would only rev to 2000rpm, lots of misfiring and alot of black smoke. Let the revs off and it cut out again. Thought try it on gas. Started it and idled on gas, but as soon as you tried to rev it, it cut out. Kept trying it for a good ten minutes on both gas and petrol. Then eventually I had enough, and revved the balls off it on gas, which evidently sent the k&n air filter up the road with a very loud bang, but it cleared the rough running and the first time ever it drove on gas without cutting out or sounding as if it was firing in the inlet manifold. Admittedly only for a couple of minutes while I got it back on the drive, but it was running better than ever without the air filter.
Just wondering if anyone has suffered from these symtoms on their 4.0 P38 and whether changing the air filter will fix it. It even blew the mesh out the brand new air flow sensor I'd just bought?

Also it seems to be pressurising and sending coolant out the overflow on the header tank, even though there is no water in the header tank and by the feel of it nothing in the top radiator pipe.

Please please anyones thoughts or suggestions are really really appreciated, I'm really losing my patients with the thing, which is a shame as I've always wanted one and it doesn't look like I'm going to get to live the dream at this rate.

I dont have any technical answers on that one but if it makes you feel any better I am having an equal ammount of hassel with my classic , which I have always wanted too.

Keep ur chin up mate!
