When out to Wales for a walk last night got back in the Hippo and it started OK, as it does when its warm. Drove 25 miles home parked up put a tape in for Waking the Dead, went back out started it and drove a mile to the offy. Came out of the Offy and it wouldn't start, not just turning over with no firing but nothing! not even a click from the soleniod. Bumped it as I was parked on a hill and got home. Parked up, switched off and then started it again. It started but the starter seemed to make a lot of noise. Switched off tried to start again nada!

This morning it started but with the same noisey starter. So I switched off waited , tried again Nada! Stripped out the airbox and fiddled with the low ampage wire to the solenoid started Ok about a dozen times. Left it outside the office 100 miles from home for eight hours 'till everyone had gone home. Typically the time you would expect it to fail and it started again Ok. Anyone else had this intermittent fault?
The only other thing I did before this all happened was **** a rabbit on the way home. and I noticed the rad fan seemed to be on.

Yeah common prob of a weak connection on the -ve terminal in all Rovers. Change the spade connector. I had the starter off twice over the weekend, solenoid was sticking, blasted WD40 on both occasions. Went through MOT with the problem,
of course its only now that the starter works everytime, she passed by the way

How come you can say F**cked and I can't say t**ted.

The battery is for the rabbit, is'nt it?

The fan has since ceased to be a problem as I added some coolant to the system , which was low.

Taking it to see if the fool, sorry, dealer will give me £2K against a 300tdi Disco this afternoon. If it starts.

On the battery?

Nope, follow the red wire (thick) to the starter motor. Above you will see a plastic insulator surrounding a small spade connector (Black). Remove, clean the terminal with emery paper (it may be green or white and corroded) and refit.

Happened to me twice so far and I keep a small bit of emery paper to clean up when she does fail.

Regards,

Steve

Cheers steve

Does that mean I can say **** but not ****. I sense I'm about to find out as I push the button.
