Noise

Morning all,

I am looking for some advice, i have just had the cv joint on passenger side replaced and now when i am driving and take my foot off the accelarter i get a rubbing/droning noise noise from the driver side i think could this be a case of that the garage have not put grease on the old cv joint. Any help would be useful.

If they just replaced the n/s CV, why would they touch the o/s one?

If the n/s one was knackered, chances are the o/s one is well worn too. Is it possible that the noise was there all the time but you now notice it more because the n/s is quiet?

That could probably be the case, they took both out to check them.

Well, for the sake of 30 quid, I'd have had it replaced anyway if it was being taken out!
The cost of the part is nothing compared to the cost of the labour.

Undo the drain plug on the bottom of the swivel and see if anything comes out.
If yours is the type without a drain plug, remove the filler plug and poke something in there to see if there's any oil / one-shot grease in it.

I have just had a very similar problem that we thought was a CV joint gone, but it turned out to be something completely different.

I recently did a 500 mile run and part way into my journey I started getting this droning sort of noise that was most apparent when I took my foot off the accelerator. Fortunately I managed to complete my journey, but shortly after I got home I heard a slight thud under the car and it all of a sudden started to shake violently. The more I pressed the throttle the more shaky it was. It turned out that the UJ's on each end of the front drive shaft were knackered because of a spline that had seized up completely. But the point I am making is I got this humming sort of noise and a scraping sound just before things went tits up.

Cheers for that, thou my cv joint was gubbed aswell. the joys of buying a disco that had never been offroad.

ive just had the same problem as you and it turned out to be the uj's on the front prop!if it turns out to be the uj's its a cheap and easy fix. got mine off ebay and cost £11 each for quality joints.

thanks il prob just replace them then, is it hard to do cos im not great with a spanner but can do things that are easy & obvious.

the main tools you need are a vice to press the old bearings out,a selection of sockets to use with the vice,spanners to undo the prop, a grease gun and lastly a nice hammer to hit the fooker! oh you will also need a pair of circlip pliers.
