Newbie Low Range Question

Hi All,

I'm very new to the Land Rover (i've had my landy less than a week). I took her out for a propper drive today (sadly just on road) to make sure all was well.

She drives well and the clutch doesnt seem to show signs of slipping at all. When changing gear it catches the revs nicely and does about 2250rpm @ 60mph.

Now i'm pretty sure i understand the principal of Low Range (im sure someone will correct me if im wrong), but its my assumption it allows the wheels to generate more power at a lower road speed.

I pulled into a car park and engaged low range (without diff lock) and pulled away. The first thing that stuck me was that she revved pretty freely without going very far at all 1st gear 5mph @ 3000+ RPM. Before i get flamed, i literally did a few meters before switching back to high range, where she drove fine. I was surprise she revved so freely, i did notice a bit of a smell too

I know Low Range should be used to get out of sticky situations (or at least thats my understanding), but if anyone could offer thoughts, that would be appreciated.

I know i have a great deal to learn so please be gentle with me

Get her into low range before you get stuck. 2nd gear low is quite useful.

I used mine today, 8" of snow drifted up under the old girl, low box, reverse, clutch up and just let her walk out of it at idle. Works a dream, plenty of control, don't need the accelerator.
