I've made this something of a tradition over the last 6 or 7 years.
Sadly this 'little toast' seems more relevant now than ever before.

The Toast:

To all poor and distressed travellers
Wherever they may be
Over land, sea, or in the air

Wishing them a speedy relief from their suffering
and a safe return to their native land
Should they so desire

So mote it be.

Let's hope that any assistance we can offer actually helps and that
next year is the beginning of a new and even better life for everyone.

Too true Martyn, the Japanese have just given $500m in aid, makes our effort look a tad poor (I mean the
governments effort, not the publics) The government should stop paying dole for a week to the scumbags
that are capable of work but choose to scrounge of us. We could send a hell of a lot more.

Did you see how much providing official cars/transport for government
ministers and senior civil servants was costing us?

The sooner these idle lackeys were made to get on their bikes the better.

Exactly, this country is in a state & a half. Priorities are so ****ed up it's unreal.

We'll gladly spend MILLIONS on re-homing economic migrants that turn out to be pimps & thieves, but we
give paltry amounts to folk who are in desperate need.

Disgusting.

For those who never saw the figures - we're talking £11.5 million for
2003. I wonder just how close the 2004 figure will get to the £15
million that was originally suggested as an aid donation for the current
crisis.

This could be a nice way of getting at B.liar, he needs knocking down a peg or two in my book. I mean, it
is UNTHINKABLE that, as a country of 50 odd million that we have to rely on personal donations. **** me
sideways, we pay MORE than enought tax to fund a sensible relief effort. Pull the soldiers out of the
gulf & send them. I find this hard to say, but the US have got it pretty much right. Soldiers (as long as
they butcher innocents) are the ONLY way the aid will get where it's needed.

I feel i should do something although I have NEVER given a penny to charity in my life. I just have this
awful feeling it doesnt get to where it's needed. Also, as I have indicated, the GOVERNMENT already has
billions of our money ready to give.

Nige (angry as **** about this ****hole situation)

thought it best to hijack an unrelated thread for a political agenda?

A suitable New Year resolution?

Indeed.

A remarkable snippet of information: I was talking to a travel agent
yesterday who said that he had spent hours phoning round customers who had
planned holidays in Indonesia etc for the New Year, offering them the
opportunity to cancel or re-arrange their holidays somewhere else. Three
families stated that they would be taking the trip as planned, not for a
holiday, but to go there and do what they could to help. I found that very
moving.

We know a couple of nurses who took a career break back in November to
go tour New Zealand (they're Lord of the Rings fans). They have
apparently just offered to go and lend a hand if needed and broken
their holiday short. As you say, rather nice that such gestures are
still found. Almost makes humanity worth it again.

wasn't overly amused by BBC webnews headline which highlighted the fact that
the government in the USofA, godblessit, had ante'd up $350M. OK, fair
enough, but the headline seemed (to me) to be emphasising the source and
amount rather than the aid, and for one of the world's richest countries,
$350M ain't that much, either, considering how much the US gets from that
part of the world in normal circs., and how much said governement is
prepared to spend "dealing" with a regime it don't like the flavour of.

meanwhile, a collection tin at the archery shoot I went to yesterday (summat
a bit over 100 people) raised over 100 quid just by being there on the
registration desk.
