Posted a couple of months ago about how the car was making 'orrible noises and there was a vibration from the engine and wasn't changing up on an upwards incline. The noise came on around 1200rpm and was most definitely coming from the bellhousing/gearbox...................or so I thought.

Only the other week disaster struck and made the whole post redundant when the serpentine belt shredded and the fan blades and viscous coupling sheared from the waterpump. The car overheated and died in the middle of the road.

I have replaced the water pump and started the car today and all is perfect. It drives like new without any noises and changes through the box perfectly in all situations at all gradients.

The car doesn't seem to have overheated to the extent that there is any lasting damage but the strange issue is how a dodgy waterpump could have caused all that noise and vibration to the point where the gearbox and overall engine performance was affected.

The problem is solved but its always nice to know the cause and effect in cases like this just in case it helps anyone else with similar problems.

One side issue - the fan blades/viscous coupling was a bugger to undo because there was only 2cm of shaft protruding from the water pump pulley making it exremely difficult to trap in a vice, even when I ground two flats. The solution I found was to undo the three bolts that retain the pulley to the pump flange, this gave about another 3cm movement, enough to get the remains of the pump flange into the vice (also gound with two flats) to give much better purchase. Several clumps later and the coupling was free.
