New toy time....

As the RRC is on it's last legs (the more i fix it, the more other problems
appear!) I've been on the look out for a replacement. After a tip off from
a mate, next weekend i shall be the proud owner of a M reg Disco V8i auto.

Took it for a quick blast up the road, 'box changed up and down, High/Low
worked ok, no nasty leaks or clonks, all the 'lectric bits worked ok and
engine quiet as a mouse. Well impressed. Couple of questions for you Disco
owners:

It's got the peeling dash problem. Any cheap fixes for this, as the
official kit is expensive (£150?). If i do use this kit how easy is it to
fit?. I do have access to industrial strength twin pack glue though.......

Sun roof leaks....where should i look for these?. It's just p****d it down
and i could not see/feel any damp bits in the carpets in the boot.

Whilst looking for something else, I spotted this ad for the dash repair.

DASHBOARD REPAIR KIT- GENUINE LR PART (BLACK - Suitable for any colour
dashboard)
If your Discovery dash has started to peel well we have the answer with this
dashboard repair kit including screws and fitting instructions. Comprises of
two plastic sections that join to form a continuous strip across the
dashboard holding down the front edge of the peeling dash. Our black kit is
better suited for dashboards that are peeling badly as it's a more thicker
and rigid than the beige and grey versions.

Just be gratefull it isn't the front one that leaks - you get a load of cold
water down the back of your neck. For what use they are on ours, Bruce
sealed them up with silicone sealer.

Ooppps nearly forgot..........any hints/tips on how to improve the MPG,
which i appriciate aint going to be much but evry little helps. Long term
plan is to Gas it.

Drive like a little old lady or walk places. Sadly, if you need to worry
about V8 fuel bills, then maybe it's not the best choice. You should pull
about 18mpg, and it will take a while to get that back after shelling out
for gas....

My gas conversion cost about £400 all in. At present unleaded is 84.9
and gas is 29.9 at the garage up the road. It did about 14mpg on gas.

If your local has gas at 39.9 and you pay someone like RPi 2 grand for
a full on conversion the equation looks very different.

Key to getting good (relatively) economy is to keep cruise speed down
and live somewhere flat. I managed to get over 20mpg on gentle
motorway cruises (manual gearbox). Keep the tyres well pumped up,
ensure your ignition system is in good shape and take the roofrack
off!

If it rattles or won't happily rev past 4000 rpm then budget a few
hundred quid for a cam change - somewhere about the 100,000 mile mark.

To be honest most of my driving will be short ish trips with the odd spot of
greenlaning and maybe the odd trip to the local USAF base to spot planes
(you can all stop laughing now!) Not worried about the fuel bills, thats
what being on call pays for, just interested as to what i should be getting.

Tim, drove it today and it revved passed 4,000rpm ok. Engine is very quiet,
compared to the RRC that is.

Other thing to check is that the coolant is clean (i.e. coolant
colour) not muddy brown. Also check that the coolant header tank is
filled to the right spot and that it doesn't use any water. Disco 3.9
doesn't seem to suffer from the same porous block / slipped liner
problem of the Range Rovers, but worth a check all the same.

Temperature shouldn't get passed half-way on the gauge unless it is
working _very_ hard (i.e. something tied on the back).

For greenlaning it will do pretty well in standard trim, but you might
want to replace the standard tyres. Biggest off-road failing of the
Discovery (IMVHO) is that the wheels are smaller than Defender ones,
so it will belly out in their ruts. But that shouldn't be a problem
if you are 'treading lightly'. A gas conversion just makes that
problem worse - underslung tanks sit slightly lower than the sills and
reduce ground clearance.
