Just joined the forum specifically because I am considering buying a land rover, a 90 TD5.

Looking at what is available I have set myself a budget of around 16K although I can go higher I'm hoping I won't need to. I only need 2 seats so a hardtop would suit my purposes but I would like a reasonable spec with air-con etc. I particularly like the 90 TD5 LE.

It will be used mainly for transporting me to work (mostly motorway) together with site visits (I'm a Project Manager). I usually cover around 15,000 miles per year.

So, a few questions:

1. I know this won't be the ideal vehicle for the motorway but will it cruise relatively comfortably at around 70mph?

2. Approximately how much will a 12 month (vehicle will have covered say 10K miles) service cost?

3. Are there any areas I need to pay particular attention to when looking at one of these?

4. I've seen a TD5 Black LE and like it but would I be better off going for the later 2.4D version?

Many thanks.

I fear you have under estimated the improvements LR have made to defenders especially the TD5. It is more than capable of maintaining 70mph on a motorway. £16K willl get you an almost new defender 90.

my mate, who'se a farmer / butcher, gets a new 90 every year without fail (he's got a standing order with the stealer). he reckons that the latest tranny injund version is a quantum leap forward in terms of power, speed, gearbox and heating / ventilation.
with your budget, you should be able to get one.

I was at a LR dealership in Newport (South Wales) just yesterday. It was the salesman there that mentioned the TD5 would find it hard going on the motorway, he actually said that it would have difficulty maintaining motorway speeds. He was trying to push the new 2.4D which is perhaps why he was being a little economical with the truth about the TD5?!!

My preference would be for a better specked 06/07 TD5 like the LE than a new (almost) 90.

no probs on the motorway, and if the bride is on board unfortunateley ya will be able to hear her!

Service wise, it all depends on where ya goo.
My last quote from a stealer for a 24k/ 2year service was around 700 notes!! (theevin toerags)
local indy around 250-300. You can use an indy without riskin ya warranty, as long as gen parts are used. best to chek fost though.
after emailing service managers at the stealers, the best price was 395 inc vat which we can get back. so we used them.
It is anoyin when ya know yer can do the job ya sen, but its the price ya pay for avin a newun.

At your budget the aint much to worry abart, as allready mentioned yo aint far off new.

LE, LX, whatever the bollox letters on em now. Yo wont go far wrong, its a Defender yooth. Enjoy it.

Just outta interest i was chatting to a chap at work who got a new defender with the ford engine and was chuffed to bits when he first got it but has had nothing but problems with it (all under warranty of course) - the air con ewnt tits up straight away, then the central locking, then some issue with the window then to ice the cake the 6 speed gearbox went kaput! I think the engine is pretty good but maybe to torquey for the gearbox (and that's in just over a year and hardly ever towing, just pottling up and down the a30 with the occasional jaunt onto site)

I have tried the newun mesen and loved it.
But I dont rekon on changin this time cos of some of the reasons yo mention .
i really regretted changin from our 300tdi to our fost td5, but it has grown on me big style.

new tax bracket is a bummer anall!!

And now I find they have issue's, well thats it, Its bad enuff with the range havin them!!!

Eh ???

Tell me more! mines cheaper than me owld hippo !

Was referin to any vehicle registerd after 23 march 2006, and if its in band G, which is any vehicle with the higher emissions. And thats 300 quid at present, and 400 before long??,
I thort that included a deafener, hope am wrong.
will look it up

As I thort.

225g/km and over is band G.

Deafener td5 is around 282, and our last rfl cost £175 as we have a pre 06.
Newun is 274g/km and will cost £300,and Dint Brown say that would be goin up to 400?

Classic was 175 anall, so thats a bargain at 20t/km!!!
