Good Morning Gentlemen.

Ive recently bought my first Land Rover - A Defender 90

After driving home, parking up and returning to my new Defender in the morning i noticed A patch on the ground where the fuel tank had been dripping - nothing to major but needs sorting non the less....

is it a bad idea to buy just the tank or should i buy a wholoe new complete system ?

Cheers
Lewis

Welcome to the loonyzone!

Our crystal balls are a bit rusty atm, what age and engine type is this Defender??

Steel tanks are prone to rust through after some years of service, my guess is you will need a new tank, unless the leak is coming from pipe union or sender gasket.

Thanks for the reply Turboman, its a 95 2.5tdi.

the leak looks like its coming from the bottom of the tank only so probably only need the new tank...

ive been looking on lrparts for a tank, i need to find my chasis number to see what tank to buy.

before i fit the new one im going to paint with red lead and black paint to help prevent rot. what do you think about tank guards ??

cheers

Tanks often rot out on the seam where the two parts are welded together, or in the bottom where water collects.

They are widely available for that model, any of the online retailers should supply, shop around for the best price.

Painting the tank is a very good idea, will give you years extra life on it.

Tank guards are only needed if you are planning on some fairly heavy off roading, not really needed in everyday use.
