hello there. Im gutted and need some advice on what might be the $6miilion question. The engine on my 2001 yr 110 td5 has apparently seized. Should i get a new one fitted, have it reconditioned by reputable mechanic who does this work or sell it for parts and cut my loses? All advice welcome.

Hi there and welcome. Maybe somebody here can help source another motor for you? Better the car you know that you've worked on than to buy another only to do it all again. If you like the car with a passion then you'll fix it regardless. If its a financial view then only you can decide. Sorry to hear about the engine seizure....

Would depend on the condition of the rest of the vehicle, and. like he said^^^^^^, how attached you are to it.

Certainly wouldn't sell it, you wont get much for a non runner.

cheers. Been quoted £1,495 for recon engine from engineengineering in glasgow part exchange. and th egarage have said £580 to replace plus any parts needed. sound ok?
 
Is that £1495 for complete engine less bolt on parts? If you said £58 an hour about ten hours. Also antfreeze oil filters to guarantee their work. Then the fitting cost ain't bad. A totally rebuilt engine with a guarantee also. A lot of money but a lot of peace of mind afterwards. Even more reason to keep it!
 
I suspect £1495 for a short motor ? - but may be wrong - either way I'd be wanting to know what caused the original to seize, and I'd also be looking online for reviews of any engine supplier before spending a dime.

You might be into changing oil coolers and such if the failure was catastrophic. Post up a bit more info about the issue, and folk on here will probably advise in more detail.......

If the vehicle is in otherwise good condition, then its worth keeping if it does (ok, did ) what you need it to do.

thanks. The engine didn't actually sieze when driving although made an unusual noise when i turned it off after long drive then wouldnt start the next day. I think I may be at fault for not topping oil as it was low (although there was no indicator in car when driving)
The mechanic said he wont know extent of any additional work until he removes engine-is this true? he said he might need to change things like gasketts.
The company supplying the reconditioned engine is called Engine Engineering in Glasgow and were recommended by Twisted of North Yorkshire who are a dedicated Landrover modifier. I was wondering if I should take it to a Landrover specialist but realise this may be a lot more for the labour and parts but possibly worth it for the knowledge and experience
 
Did you look at td5 engines on e bay, yes there are many bandits out there but there are some reputable salvage people who will offer a short warranty just to give you chance to fit it and give it a trial. I've never bought an engine (yet) but I've bought some bits from gentlemen of salvage, and they seem to be OK. Maybe someone on here knows a good reputable company.
 
There is a pretty good TD5 in my 1999 Discovery. Sadly the chassis and sills etc are all rotten, so it is up for breaking. The engine is good I think, and running well, but obviously no guarantee that it'll keep that way. I wouldn't be wanting much for it, but I'm about 500 miles away from you and the logistics might be a bit of a 'challenge'...

Look at the serial number of the engine it will begin with either 10p or 15p (there are others much later) but I think the 15p only started in late 2001, if they are the same its pretty easy, if they are different its complex and probably a bit of a non starter.

Yes the TD5 is a pretty strong engine it would be good to know how it came to this state, the oil pump bolt is known to let go and knacker them.
 
Always the top end that suffers starvation first.. Rattle rattle. They'll have to dismantle best part of the engine to sure of what they are repairing. a must for there guarantee
