Hi all, my name is Chris from North yorkshire got myself a Disco 2.5 on a M plate 147000 miles, the disco is a fine machine but i am experenceing white smoke on start up,this fades after a short drive,i was told it could be head gasket so off i went to a local Landrover specialist who is about 5 miles from my house, noticed no smoke from disco when driving, the disco to garage so when i arrived the mechanic popped bonnet took off expansion tank lid and said "yep head gasket gone" the water in expansion tank was cold, he explained about compressions and some sort of mis feed, totally baffaled me.Anyway what i was wondering was he has quoted me about £550.00  for head gasket skim and fit, full engine service and cambelt change is this about right or am i getting my eyes ripped out.Love disco but dont want to be scuppered. any advice regarding head gasket as i felt diagnosis was eaisly came to, cheers all.

Just the header tank water being cold doesn't mean head gasket gone mate.

Could be a blockage preventing circulation of coolant????.

Hows the temperature reading when driving it?.

Gasket MIGHT be gone but my advice is to get a second opinion mate ;)

hi chris2841,

i would defenatly get another opinion, just for peice of mind as these days can't be too carefull.

what symtoms you got?

put as much detail as you can as the members may be able to sort you out or point you in the right direction.

i had a problem with the temperature neddle wondering up and down on my 300 tdi discovery.

spoke to various members tried various things and in the end it was a sticking thermostate costing less than £5

she's been fine ever since. (touch wood)

so you never know

cheers mark

Just To Let You Know He Should Of Done A Test First With The Header Tank And Some Special Fluid They Use. If It Changes Colour When Doing The Test Then The Head Gasket Needs Replacing. I Do Not Know Of Any Mechanic That Can Tell If The Head Gasket Has Gone Just By Looking Into The Header Tank. The Cost For Replacing The Head Gasket By A Landrover Mechanic Is In The Area Off £300 -£350 But That's Without The Skim.

Hope This Helps.

Shane

Thanks for speedy replies, symptoms are on start up normal cloud of smoke, let idle for 2-3 mins before pulling away, bit of smoke, when slowing down from 3rd to 2nd for junction get a cloud of white smoke, when temp gauge reaches the middle of gauge it does not fluctuate at all stays at normal, from there on in, done sixty mile trip in it other day temp fine no smoke when driving, water in expansion tank seems to stay at correct level, oil seems fine as well, the mechanic did say as there was some brownish gunge on side of expansion tank that was an indicator of goosed head gasket. All in all smokes when first started and when driven for approx 200 metres it fades out.Acceleration is a bit slow on initial take up but soon kicks in, Cheers once again

Hi Chris

I recently started a thread titled "white smoke" as I was having a very similar problem. Had some great replies and ideas and eventually found what was causing my problem. Just do a search on white smoke and it should turn it up.

Hope it helps.

Just a quick one, have you checked the oil level, as mine did the white smoke and a bit poor performance when i put a bit more oil then i should, doh!
I also thought the gasket had gone, the guys did a pressure test and all was ok after a couple of weeks when it had dripped out a bit.
