Hello All,

after I had my Freelander TD4 (two years old, 20000km) at Landrover's one
week ago to get rid of nasty squeaking sounds in the driver's door I got a
new surprise yesterday:

I put in the ignition key and was still sitting in the car before starting
it when I heard this strange sound - like a fan maybe. I had never heard
this sound before in this car. After starting the car, it was gone. But just
hours later, when I used the car again, this sound reappeared after about
100metres.
It sounds similar to the sound I remember from my old GOLF - but that sound
could only be heard when I had stopped the car after driving for quite some
time and the engine needed to cool down. But after 100metres....??!!

AND there is this second sound, when I turn the steering wheel: sounds like
a clicking, not very loud, but it makes me nervous.

AND, oh, by the way: Is it a not to be solved problem that the whole
dashboard is vibrating, rattling and knocking when I drive on a slightly
cobbled surface?

Chris flipter, rather desperate by now

I was under the impression that LR fitted a reasonable radio to the
Freelander... the usual LR solution would be to make sure you turn the
radio up before you drive on slightly cobbly surfaces.

The fan sound may well be just that - the electric cooling fan(s) on the
radiator this could be a sign that the thermoswitch is faulty. You
should get this replaced as they also have a habit of failing the other
way so that the cooling fan never turns, this can have detrimental
effects on the engine !

The steering click could be anything really, a loose piece of trim (
given the other problems you've had) a worn bush/linkage, worn steering
rack, wheel bearing, brake pads, dashboard trim etc...

Remote diagnosis of clicks, squeaks and rattles is never easy but
perhaps you should consider the LR marketing blurb a bit more closely...
"the rear tail lights give the impression of two round lamps to pay
homage to the Land Rover heritage". Maybe your rattles are a sign of
your Freelander paying it's own homage to it's heritage so should be
appreciated rather than obliterated. The only problem you may have is
that the two other Land Rover traditions (leaks and bits falling off)
may be waiting their opportunity to pay their own tribute.

cheers

Your ears get very tuned to new sounds, I have the returning rattle which
may be a loose exhaust, but then it may be the fan, or it may be a million
other things.

Foolishly I put my hand on the hot manifold to check but it did not stay
there long enough to find out if it was working loose again. :(
