i have attempted to tackle changeing the front discs on my 2001 defender.

have the caliper off but cant get the disc off can anyone help fast please before it gets dark.

do you have the hub assembly off? if its like the older ones, you need to remove the hub then the bolts hold the disk onto the rear of the assembly. when its off it works best to put the thing back in your wheel on the floor and hold the wheel to get leverage on the bolts... if they were anything like mine, their a Bitch to get undone.

would that involve disconnection the track rod end? if so no i hit it with a hammer and now there is fluid leaking out from the ball

why, are they wearing thin? i suggest you go straight to hal-frauds and buy a haynes for your year, if its the same as much earlier models you need to remove the drive member, the 52mm nuts, outer bearing and then the rest of the hub assembly. the disk is attached from the rear.

As Griffdowg says, put the disk back on the wheel using the road nuts to secure it. I put something soft beneath the disc and drop the tyre onto the floor, i use the weight of the tyre along with the disc being bolted to the tyre to separate the two.
take your time, it's not a bad job to do at all.
