I usually spend my time in the p38 part of this here forum but have come to the conclusion that a 110csw is needed to fill a space on the driveway alongside my p38 & Mercedes v220.
Why? - well, the simple answer is that I want to bugger off to foreign lands and explore on & off road - my p38 is in good nick, reliable and a good drive - I have no worries about long journeys. The V220 is in the process of a full rebuild/resto as it's one of the best family (4 kids & 2 dogs) transporters around and it'sa keeper as well.
I need something for boys trips away so a 110 csw it is - the kids want a Camel Trophy 110 :D and my wife says I can have what I like as she's keeping the p38.
So.....I thought I'd pop in here to ask for advice on whats best to go for 200/300tdi or td5?
Budget probs up to 10k in total (landy+goodies+camping stuff) - I've been searching ebay/autotrader and am amazed at the variations in prices - some decent motors at ok prices and some overpriced ratty ****heaps.
I've been searching the forums but still undecided what to go for, what stuff I need and how much to pay. Any advice appreciated and I'm looking forward to the usual landyzone **** taking and general abuse ;)

After the comfort of a P38 and merc yer in for one hell of a surprise. No carpet and no door seals to start with.

go down to the dealers and take a test drive.

if that hasn't put you off, then ask yourself are you really just wanting to get some blinged shiny thing to drive on the roads with.. or are you really wanting to go on an expedition.

where abouts are you btw? :)

10k sounds like a tight budget depending on the camping + goodies budget and whether you will do the work yourself to fit out the 110.

If you tot up the camping + goodies you get to a vehicle budget.

Some contributors to this forum talk of excellent examples from £1500, but my 110 cost this and needed a new chassis.

I have seen under 10 years old going for less £10k, and same amount for early 1990s one. You need to be able to assess whether one or the other is worthy of your hard earned, and as I couldn't I decided to get one that I know needs a lot of work then I know from chassis up its a goodun.

Trax - I'm in Tranent in sunny East Lothian - I lived in gala for a few years, where are you?
I'm definitely going exploring so not after a blingy pose-mobile - first trip will be the Pyrenees next summer (I have relatives down there who have knowledge of the tracks in the area so a good place for a first trip)
Timc - it's the wide variation in prices that is a bit confusing - I'm used to restoring vehicles so mechanical/welding/bodywork/fitting out/electrical will all be done by me. I have no doubt that I'll look at many 110's but it's the initial filtering that has me stumped at the moment - there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to some of the pricing - I can only assume that there is a lot of ambitious over pricing going on in the hope that with defender going out of production then buyers will jusy pay over the odds.

over berwick way.

depends on what you are after. the defender for me is more of a worker so i'm not too fussed about having the inside really nice and i'm tight.

yup prices can be all over the shop and it totally depends on the effort you want to put in.

eg, if you want to do a complete rebuild, then you can buy a semi stripped 110 csw 300tdi including engine for 500quid. then spend a few k rebuilding it to spec.

or you can buy them fully kitted up and all stages inbetween.

have a good think about what you want :)
