Hi, basically I just want to tell people my problems and findings just incase it helps anyone one day.
I started noticing patches of an oil spill on the ground under the engine tray of my 1998 l series freelander I noticed it even more so when it had been raining(really noticeable!
). first thoughts running through my head was firstly whip the tray off and have a look at what it actually was. the tray was absolutely packed of my mud, twigs, gunk, oil you name it... cleaned all that out had a look from the ground upwards into the engine bay its just looked really oily and old(which it is
) being a weekend diy mechanic I thought "its just the crap in the tray getting wet when its raining", so pressure washed that tray up a good`n looked brand new, next day it rained still there was a patch of this fluid so this time as its was a clean tray I ran my fingers through and it felt like an oily texture and smell and was a light brown colour too, started to think it could be transmission fluid? it was all over the tray so it was hard to see where it was coming from but also the front of the engine was really wet:doh:, next step at the weekend I did was purchase a hand spray pump, stiff brush and some degreaser and cleaned the old gunk off the whole engine so it was spotless(nearly) which took 3 hrs
took her for a spin, grabbed a white board and waited for the drips. Low and behold the drips came but was basically clean looked down in the bay and it was JEFFING DIESEL:amen::amen:, it was leaking really badly from the 4th cylinder injector pipe union from the diesel injection pump which I gather because the engine was filthy the diesel was mixing with it and it was giving a false trail as to what it was, I quickly removed the 1st cylinder injector line with a 17mm spanner nipped up the 4th line reconnected the 1st and hey presto no more leak!!!!!!!!!:5bparty:
some of you may think is a boring post but if you have an oil based brownish leak and your not sure what it is.., this may help.
Thanks.
