Mud Tyres - best size

Having just bought a 300 TDi 1996, I am going to be using it for a bit of 'fun' at the weekends, and therefore looking to put on some Mud Tyres - something along the lines of BF Goodrich.

The alloys are 16" on it at prresent, and my question is, do I just get the same size tyre that are on, or can I get any larger (ie side wall) without getting any scrubbing etc, as there has been no modification to it whatsover (yet anyway ).

I have made a fair few searches, but cannot actually find an answer to this question, so sorry if it has been brought up before and I have missed it searching, but take it easy on me, as its my first post

I got some 33x12.5x15 Kumho MT KL71 with 15" modular rims, cant fault em and at £90 a tyre pretty cheap.

Have just wondered how people can say they've searched, then post this question in the Discovery section when the very first post in that section is a sticky (so it's always at the top) regarding what tyres fit and what tyres need body cuts etc.

This has got to be the most asked question on LZ, and the most answered, hence the sticky at the top of the page. Mud tyres are no good anyway, you need rubber ones.

not great on tyre sizes, and im sure someone will correct me, pretty sure you can get larger circumference tyres keeping the width the same.

But then again if your going to mod it up why not upgrade to bigger and fatter wheels anyway? Get yourself down to Newbury showground on Sunday and your bound to pick some up there cheap!

Thanks for the heads up on the show, but a bit too far to travel, but noticed that the following week they are at Skipton, which is about 1 hour from me, so will be making that trip I think

Paul, just getting all the egg of my face - guess I didn't see the wood from the trees - sorry :doh:

Having read the guide, and looked into the tyres, the most common size is the 235/85/R16 which require's a little trimming here and there:-

Rear fender trimming
Front endcap trimming
Steering stops
Possible bump stop height

Not bothered in doing a bit work to get them to fit, but before I get more egg on my face, is there any guides to what needs to be done.......

After speaking with my local tyre fitter - these are the tyres he recommended over the BF Goodrich, as for 16" ones they are £100.00 as opposed to £130.00 for the BF ones.....

How are they on the road?

They seem sweet, I think that central pattern helps, above 60 and they feel even better.

nice boot's but remember the kl71's have a directional tread pattern so you will either need six or somthing in the same size for a spare.

I have a Brand New Wrangler A/T tyre on my spare, I know its not a M/T tyre, but will do me for a spare to get me somewhere.

just need to work out what 'trimming' etc I need to do now.......

there's a good guide in the sticky as to what trimming you ''might'' need to do.

is your spare the same size as the new one's?

That's a point, my spare is what I have on now - 235/70/R16.....mmm so that may cause a bit of a problem - but hey, might be like havinga space-saver fitted.....sure it will be ok as a 'get me home' tyre

It should be fine as a get you home tyre, but dont go fast or long distances with a different sized tyre on

As for cutting .. put the new tyres on and se where they catch on full articulation! Simple ... Trouble is Landrovers are built to a 'human' tolerance, so what suits one might not quite suit another .. mine has 31x10.5 R15's on at the mo on 8J rims and they just catch at full articulation on the rear side valance .. the front end is fine, doesn't catch at all.

Above 31's you'd definitely need to trim in a few places I reckon, and you'd probably need to adjust the steering lockstops.

My spare is also a 'standard' Pirelli Scorpion tyre (can't recall exact size) but to me is purely for a dire emergency when I can't repair a puncture or cba to repair it .. and is used at low speed to get me home .. depending on how far away I am ..
