Mud shield fitment

Good evening one and all.

Took delivery of a pair of new mudshields from the good people of the Paddock today. The old bus has none at the moment so all the mud and water currently all over the shop here is slopping towards the engine. Have three helpful holes in the upper part of the wings where original bits must have been attached, however, can't quite get these blighters to line up with the holes in my new bits. Also where in all creation do they fit on the other side. I assume that bolting or riveting the things in place will be sufficient, but the "gaffa" remains on standby.

As always I apologise in advance for the inherent simplicity of my question, and look forward to the usual range of suggestions.

Unforunately I have to pop out for a brief while, so will be offline fo next 3 hours or so. However will absent myself for a short spell to take the air and, who knows, perhaps take a few quick "piccies". Will post them later if I can.

Drivers side Mudshield also needs a separate piece that bolts to the inner wing to cover steering linkage. There should be a lip welded on to the bulkhead that the top of the mudshields secure too. The lower part of the shields bolt through the bulkhead pretty much in line with where your feet go inside.
 
Ahd nevva heard of them either! :confused: Does just sound like something else for mud to collect behind tho'. Be interested in piccies. ;)
They're the metal shields that sit at an angle between the bulkhead and the underside of the front wings, just behind the front wheels above the mudflaps. They stop the bulkhead getting caked in mud.
 
Holy thread resurrection! I have a Series ? not sure see my avatar for reference. The mudshields inside the wings are completely scrod, see photos for evidence. I'm looking at the various offerings from Paddock and can't see anything remotely resembling them. Looking around the I can only see a couple of different types. I'll be grateful if someone will please advise which one I should be using. Tonk is plated on a 'F', 1968 but I suspect she's been modded out of her original state and maybe the mudshields are 'home brewed'. Left image is the right mudshield and vice versa.

Pretty sure these are the part numbers you'll need, think Paddocks do a galvanised version too.

I think the general recommendation is to fit them with a small gap using thick washers where it attaches the bulkhead to let water/crud drain and not build up.

RH - MRC6081
LH - MRC6082
Steering box - 330459

Although these would be the earlier part numbers (lights in the middle):

LR52L
LR52R

Thanks Hopper, you confirm what i suspect, they're what I reckon too, my lights are on the wing, the picture with the daft dog is Tonk. And re fitting with a gap is the way forward I've heard. Let's the aforementioned water and crud drain away preventing the footwell from falling out!

YRM Solutions sell them, good quality steel with the fixing bolts. They also supply an angled plate to fix it to the underside of the wings. I tried using bonding material to fix the angled plate, in the end I just riveted then in. I also followed a great tip from someone on this site: mount tap washers between the bulkhead and the mud shield to leave an air gap so that crud,/water doesn't gather and rot everything again. They're a simple fit but they do a great job keeping the engine bay, bulkhead and upper wings free of crud.
 
25mm? Wow, I thought we were talking about 2 or 3mm...
Doesn't 25mm mean so much mud can get up through the gap that you may as well not bother fitting them at all?
 
When doing mine I also hung a rubber flap down from those bolts covering the foot well and the outrigger. Keeps crud off those parts and greatly slows the tin worm.

I just used an extra nut when I fitted mine so I had a nut each side. Bolt head, bulkhead, nut, mud shield, nut.
 
I put two nuts between the two plates works fine so about 12mm gap.
The only time tyre can spray up the gap is going in reverse.
