Not good ... only about 22 miles per gallon.

It should do a lot better than that.

My suggestions include precision timing of the injection pump - probably advancing the timing quite a lot. In some engines, the "standard" setting is no good at all, and a BIG improvement is possible.

It is easy enough to do, and there was a series of threads on the procedure a while back..

Basically you are going to advance the timing until a blip on the throttle makes it "clatter", and back it off just enough so it doesn't "clatter".

If you don't understand this enlist someone who does, to show you.

30+ mpg should be within reach of any 300 tdi Disco

I got a mate who owns a garage and is a top notch diesel mechanic luckily to set up the injector pump , timing and turbo boost pressure on my 94' 200tdi and am now gettin' a shocking 35 mpg and even higher on long runs which came as a rather nice surprise considering the rediculous cost of fuel in the UK , he has told me if I remove the largest of the two exhaust boxes it will improve it a bit more as that box seems to get clogged up with crud and causes poor performance after a while .

on my old 300 could get 39 mpg on motorway [65mph ]and with my td5 auto at mo can get about 37 on motorway doing about 60mph.
i find good tyres does make a differance to fuel consumption.

oopss
also meant to say
1 - check ur tyre pressures - makes hell of a differance
2- fit a k&n air filter again good for ~2mpg
me I get about 575miles to a tank - and thats not watching the speed either
(flat out mostly):):):)

thanks for all replys, my tyres are standard and have about 38 to 40 psi and its a manual box, my old 200tdi gave me about 34mpg.

I do 6 miles total a day and no motorway runs.

Right this weekend i will set about it with my big hammer.

thanks

Got a 2002 TD5 Disco (manual), well serviced, just drive it normally, for 20 litres worth of fuel i get about 80 miles around town and about 100 on a run. I'm sure some people manage to get more to the gallon by driving carefully....but i don't...wish i did! :(

Mate has a slightly newer TD5 auto and his mpg is worse than mine....:D

I put 50 quid in my TD5 and get 130 miles and the diesel lights back on!!! I know the air flow sensor is nackered but do you think it could cause it to be this bad or something else....? Dan
