Hi everyone, 91 Defender 90 200tdi due for mot in a few weeks! Last year he said there is almost enough play at the front wheels, raikos, to fail it, got it as an advisory, i wonder how much play is acceptable and how much it will cost to fix them if it fails, there is oil leaking out of the nearside one, only minor though. He also said that i should notice the slack at the steering wheel, steers fine to me.

It should only fail if the play is "excessive".
You might get away with just removing a shim from under the top pin, but if in doubt, don't skimp on components that your life depends on - replace them.

Have you got oil in your swivels? If so, drain it and replace with one-shot grease - that'll stop the leak.

I shyed away from sorting out play in my swivel joint until I had to replace a track rod end and then (once the TRE was removd ) I put a spring ballance on the swivel and found NO resistance.
Took one shim out and got my readings. result, no wheel wobble and an MOT pass..

personaly if i get an advisory on any steering or braking components i do as soon as possible and not wait for next mot you leave yourself open to all sorts of prosecution if involved in an accident due to failure of said component. as advisorys show up on the mot record
