those are a *complete* pain in the arse. Personally, I'd either not bother
or fit plain plus spring washers. I never bothered re-locking any of mine,
and they didn't come loose.

They did - or were s'posed to, but weren't fitted very often, as the
army thought it was alright to wait for the engine (and exhaust
manifold) to heat up and meet!

On a 101 it is common for the manifolds to be untrue (I have one pair
of true, which I had machined). The easiest way to ensure a fit is to
use the gaskets - bugger though they are to fit on a 101.

I also have an old (now u/s) manifold which demonstrates just how bad
the casting can be - i.e. nearly 1/4inch out on 3rd.

One of these days all of your plans are going to come to fruit Austin.

So, that'll be a 6 wheel drive 201" minibus with a seriously stretched
Sherpa body and a 5l inline-8 diesel engine then?

silly arse...

actually, I've no real desire to do a 6-wheel 101. The 6-wheeler was always
going to be a coiler, with either a defender or disco body; having done a
photoshop mockup of a 6-wheeler disco it looks quite convincing, but it'd be
more work to get the body looking tidy than a defender body.

'snot only the army, though - most of the V8s didn't have exhaust gaskets.

More an issue for the (unique) 101 exhaust manifold though, which ISTR
was caused by casting errors or somesuch.

Morph will be pleased, he's feeling a tad homesick!

What time do you shut the shutters and sit in the shop?

I can probably (pending disaster, catastrophy or man made nightmares)
pop around tomorrow after work.
