Hi i have just purchased a freelander td4 on a 04 plate but i,m finding the engine is missfiring now and again mostly when its been stood and i start it up.i had the oil and filters changed today and was told i could have a weak injector. So i went to a garage near me thats a landrover mechanic and asked him if he would run a diagnostic which he is going to do wednesday but he started the engine and revved it up and it was missing quite bad but when i left the guy to go home i was driving along and the engine sort of coughed and the engine started running sweet as anything. An hour later when it had been stood i went out to try it and it was missing and very lumpy again.Anyone got any ideas what it could be.tia

Could be a few things really, it's a common problem on the diesel for the injector wiring loom to fracture where the connectors meet the injector solenoids.
Take off the acoustic cover and wiggle each twisted pair of cables just above the connectors in turn when the engine is idling to test for this, maybe the EGR not closing properly due to crud build up, which can also affect the MAP sensor, even those that have changed their EGR for a bypass one will still need to clean out the manifold and MAP sensor in my opinion.

It could of cause be a leaking injector, do a leak back test, if you do not have access to an Hawkeye or T4, failing MAF sensor ? unplug and see how it runs unplugged.

as artic has said , plus as you've just bought it, is the fuel ok, has it been standing for a while

maybe also run some injector cleaner and add some diesel plus

did he check the crankcase filter

hi thanks for the replys .its going on the diagnostics machine in the morning but he wants the vehicle tonight so he can plug the machine n before he starts it cold.As rgards the fuel i put some in yesterday from the same garage i hae used for the last 5 years with no issues.Yes the vehicle as been stood on a forecourt for around 4 weeks i think i have also purchased some injector cleaner but i was going to leave putting it in till he as run the diagnosis.Having said all that when i started it this morning it was a little lumpy but i left it running a little then went for a drive on the motorway and it never missed a beat but thats the problem i may go out and start it now and it could be miss firing bad. Thanks
