ok,
So I have sort of broken my engine 200tdi conversion.
Water ingress and now it's running on 3 so suspect bent conrod.

Time and money is an issue at the minute as I am building an extension and winter is fast approaching.

I don't know if my engine will have the ladder frame bolts through the flywheel and therefore would need engine out to rebuild anyway.

So I was thinking of putting another engine in so I can build mine at my leisure. What do you think?
Would prefer a running disco as I can hear engine and then sell parts scrap shell to make up money as like I said I am skint.
I can get hold of 2 so far:
1. 186k no starter or alternator but can be heard running etc £400
2. 222k with still a months mot and has 12 month old starter and alt and only needs a battery £350

Mileage concerns me a little as both are currently just used for pottering on a farm so don't know any history

But with record snow levels forecast for this year I want my defender

Can you find out how many owners, how early in their lives they did that mileage - this may indicate how they were looked after (the one I just scrapped did most of its miles with first owner who spent thousands on servicing and I still have all the receipts).
3. Buy a totally different car for now, there's a lot of cheap motors about now that scraps gone down - MOTed focus Astra fiesta etc for a couple of hundred quid and drive that while you're rebuilding yours then sell it on. From your two options Id go and view both to look for smoke/leaks/knackered turbo/general condition. If you are planning on scrapping whats left I got a whole £32 for mine but it really was bare apart from the back door and an alpine light.

I'd want to listen carefully to both running, pick the one that starts easiest and sounds best. Neither mileage should bother one that has been looked after. Look for bubbles in the expansion tank when it's revved and chronic oil leaks.

Sounds like you making hard work for yourself.

With no effort at all I've found two engines for similar money but better condition and lower mileage.

One is a Make Offer too, so chance to get cheaper. And there were a load of other listings, a few around this price point, or just a tad more. And a few auctions too.

Pay by PayPal and at least you are covered to some degree should the engine then turn out not be as described.

Alternatively look for listings like this and contact the person to see if the engine is available, condition and price.

I have another car but want the defender ready for winter as lots of back roads to work.
Hmmm might look at engine option, just thought if I get disco for £350 I might make £150-200 back which is much cheaper than £500 engine.

Both are 2 hrs away so don't want to look at both

Ok, done!
A nice productive day. I have bought an engine on its own that I will drop straight in and also 4 conrods and Pistons (used) to fix the engine that comes out.

Just need to read up on the best way to remove my engine now to make sure it all goes as smooth as possible
